1. Which of the finalist theories appeals to you the most?
The most appealing theory for me is John Stuart Mill’s Utilitarianism because men always want to be happy. I believe that Happiness is the final end of man because most of us are not contented on what we have. We want more good things to happen in our lives, more pleasurable and more desirable one. Happiness brings different things in us. We are eagerly trying to do things, exploring things that make us happy and satisfied. We want to be praise and recognize by man. After all praising and recognizing ones work, your work will give confident and happiness. That will make us high as if were in heaven. If not recognize by others, Proving your worth using your gifts, talents and skills will gives you happiness. Sometimes happiness is merely wrong and bad in other cases because we just do it without thinking. Our reason is we are having fun and it supply happiness. After all it is your life. Drive it wherever you go. Happiness is the ultimate end of men. Hackers hack because of happiness it brings even they will be endangered and it will be in pain if you will be caught. Programmers, who developed computer worms and viruses, publish nude photos and the like. They gain happiness and pleasures from doing these things even it violates the law in the land. You see happiness is the final end of a man. It is not bad to be happy at all times but wrong happiness and discontentment makes you sinful. Well, were talking about happiness not just in computing but in general. Computer users explore things in the Web, hack things that make them happy, sending abusive email or messages, spam, sending worm and viruses, internet hoaxes, publishing nude photos and a lot more. But you see they do all of this things because it brings happiness to them although it’s bad. But these things make them happy and satisfied. If they will not be happy and discontented they will do things to make them happy and contented even it is the wrong one. Sometimes the wrong moves, wrong actions and wrong motives make them happy and contented.
Not all the time we’re happy, not all the time were successful and not all the time were correct. “There is a right time for everything,; a time to be born, a time to die, a time to plant; a time to harvest; a time to kill; a time to heal; a time to destroy; a time to rebuild; a time to cry; a time to laugh; a time to grieve; a time to dance; a time for scattering stones; a time for gathering stones; a time to hug; and a time not to hug; a time to find; a time to lose; a time for keeping; a time for throwing away; a time to tear; a time to repair; a time to be quiet; a time to speak up; a time for loving; a time for hating; a time for war and time for peace”.
You see life is full of challenges; it’s a long time process of learning. Find the true happiness because it is the final end of man. And if you found it, treasure it with all your heart.
HAPINESS
There are moments in life when you miss someone so much that you want to pick them from your dreams and hug them. Dream what you want to dream; go where you want to go; be what you want to be, because you have only one life and once chance to do all things you want to do.
May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human, enough hope to make you happy. Always put yourself in others’ shoes. If you feel that it hurts, it probably hurts the other person too. The happiness of person don’t necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes their way.
Happiness lives for those who cry, those who hurt, those who have searched, and those who tried, for only they can appreciate the importance of people who have touched their lives.
Love begins with a smile, grows with a kiss and ends with a tear. The brightest future is based on a forgotten past, you can get along in life until you let go of your past failures and heartaches.
When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so that when you die, you’re the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.
2.Which do you think seems to predominate in the world of computing as you know it?
Again, my answer is Happiness is the final end of man, John Stuart Mill’s Utilitarianism. Why? Because human are full of discontentment. They want to achieve greater things. If they are not happy they will find new one, new ideas that will make them happy and makes them more pleasurable. Happiness is the main goal of man. We achieved too many things, waste too many time just to be happy even we suffered from it. Well, a person wants life time happiness but lifetime happiness is very difficult to achieve. I just think I must be contented on what I have now. Unluckily, only few find the true happiness. Maybe lifetime happiness can be achieved by those people who truly seek. Anyway, Life is a full of challenge.

Saq3: Preliminary Theories
Oh boy! SAQ3 is too difficult to answer. Well judging and making decision is too hard to do maybe because I need to check my self first. “Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judge: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and behold, a beam is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye”. Oh it’s too difficult. How can I judge if I will not check myself, if I have mote in my eyes and my heart is full of lies. I must see clearly so that I can decide and judge according to this matter. That’s why I answer all of these things. After thorough understanding, I honestly answered the following.
Software piracy is morally bad but morally good under certain circumstances. To those countries like United States of America there is a law being enforced that infringement of intellectual property like software piracy is morally bad and if you will be caught you are liable for all the damage you have, plus you will be in jail. Here in the Philippines were we have a very high computer literacy rate. There is a high demand for computer software and programs. But the income level of Filipinos in general is not so high meaning its to hard to live “ mahirap ang buhay dito sa Pilipinas”. That’s why most Filipinos are very practical nowadays. And I do understand Filipinos; nowadays software piracy is becoming popular and ordinary. Come to think of it. If you will buy licensed software which is very expensive one, after you copied to your personal computer what will be the next? The licensed software you bought will be junk and useless. Yes, you can use that again if the program you install for 3 months or a year had an error, and you need to reinstall it. But then if not you just put it into your cabinet and label it for reference. It’s the same buying pirated one and impact buying pirated CD’s, videos and cassette tapes is affordable. “Maka Masa Talaga”. So what’s the point of having licensed software? But you see the real problem is that only few Filipinos can buy original one and that are those who are in A and B level. C can buy original one but need to save money just to buy for it. But D and E level can’t. That’s why for me there are good things in software piracy. For me copying software is not merely wrong. I think it’s upon the motive, the desires and thoughts of the person involved. And the one who can answer if software is bad or good is you and you alone.
Pornography on the net is morally bad under all circumstances. Publishing photos in the net is very bad. There are too many guys blushing around, enjoying, doing their “evil thoughts & desire” seeing all of these nude photos, after all it’s free. I don’t get the point even professional one or with a higher degree published nude photos and the like watching nude photos on the internet just to satisfy their “basic need”. Come to think of it. It’s alright if only the guys will be seeing it, rather those who are at the matured age. But sometimes even I’m not browsing the website of it, it will appear. Make me feel so a shame about it. Also the youngster can easily browse the internet that will open there mind for it, putting evil things in there thoughts and evil desires. Oh lust of the flesh. It is truly bad under all circumstances. Publishing nude photos violate God’s law. The Devil used the internet to get the soul of every human being to be with Him in Hell. It’s good if those person who will browse the internet is very wise cannot be fool by lusty things but then if not it is a trap. Publishing nude photos of a woman is merely and absolutely bad. What will be the feelings of those women in the photos? They will be upset and sad. And in there mind whoever do this to them must be put into jail. It shows disrespect. Oh man, God gave you a partner in life and so love the God’s given choice for you. Don’t put nude photos in the internet, respect women they are created to be loved not to be abuse by men. I just think that those men who published nude photos of a woman are very sick. They need a doctor to heal them. That’s God alone who can heal them.
Creation of worms and computer viruses for me is morally bad but good under certain circumstances. Why? It’s upon the motive of the person. If I create worms and computer viruses just to know if I am knowledgeable in computing, well that is good. Because I just exercise what I’ve thought and impact it’s a new knowledge. For me I will be proud of my work. It’s a brilliant idea. Yes, some part of it is morally wrong because I will test it trough the others computer which will cause damage of individual property but then it is upon your conscience who will dictate of what you’re going to do. Who will discern bad or good things? In this situation I will be in the middle.
Infringement of intellectual property rights (of computer programmer) yes, that is morally bad under all circumstances. We have our own idea. Right! All of us have different talent and skills. You see we are created by God on His own image and that is supreme. We have our own uniqueness and style. We are all original. So infringement of intellectual property is bad under all circumstances. And those programmers who do this are just jealous and they don’t have trust in their selves. They just want there own benefit “Mga swapang sila”.
Violation of privacy (in communication via Internet) is morally bad under all circumstances. There are many traditions and beliefs in the Philippines. One of this is the example below.
Emily with 2 children has a visitor in their house. His name is John. She entertained and talk to John, when they are in the climax of there conversation her daughter Riza entered as if she is joining their conversation. Her mother is really mad to her and upset with her character. That’s why she said to Riza to go to her room. Typically Filipinos, doesn’t want to be disturbed when they are talking to someone who is really important. Plus the topics they are talking are very private and needs understanding and concentration. Right! That’s why violation of privacy in communication via Internet is merely bad under all circumstances. Those “Sinaunang Tao ” will be mad at you if you interfere in there conversation.
Plagiarism is morally bad under all circumstances. Ones you make a computer program, a project, assignment doing by yourselves and someone take and use as one’s own the ideas then it is merely bad and unfair. It’s alright if you need the idea of your classmate, co programmer and co employee. But if your idea will be taken to you and the idea you have will be owned by someone else as if he/she is the one who originally made all of this things then it’s really bad, this act violate one’s property. Thus stealing ones idea is merely wrong.
Spamming for me is morally bad under all circumstances. All advertisement in radio, TV, newspapers and Magazine as well in the internet must be paid. But nowadays almost all spam is commercial advertising. I do understand that advertisement in the Internet is too expensive but then how come we will have a point of sale or boost sale of a company if it will not be advertised it legally.
Hacking is morally bad but morally good under certain circumstances. In Bureau of Intelligence like FBI and NBI hacking is good because it is there job to locate person and to investigate. Well for those ordinary people like me hacking is good but it will be bad if you steal something in the company or organization. If you hack just to seek for new knowledge then it’s not bad. Hacking for me is not merely wrong if you only know your limitation. Honestly speaking I want to hack, well just to prove that I have wit, but then I can’t because I don’t know how to. On the other hand when you say hacking or you go trough hacking you will be in trials. Trials of your dignity and pride, anyway, it’s “hard to locate you”. Sometimes you don’t have the intention to steal but you do it instantly. Sometimes hackers are just curious to find something inside the company or government organization but most of the time hackers go beyond, do some sort of stealing, getting money from the others trough credit cards and ATM cards, then it is truly bad. If there is a conscience retaining from you then you must stop it as soon as possible so that you will not have sin against God. Your conscience is truly your enemy, but I think those hackers who steal one’s owned property and kill they don’t have the conscience anymore their soul is in danger.
Computer Abuse is merely bad under all circumstances, well from the word abuse people who use the computer as a whole must know their limitation. It’s good we have a computer right now because we can easily communicate and do some sort of office work, as well as our assignment. We can easily browse the net through the use of computer to find new knowledge through searching the web, but honestly speaking I don’t get the point why people abuse the computer, come to think of it, computer (internet, programs) as a whole helps us a lot. I just think if all the users abuse the computer itself then maybe one of this day computers will not function anymore. And the computer era will be face out, so no to computer abuses.
Computer crimes are morally bad under all circumstances. Why? Because when you said crime you have sinned against God and at the same time you are violating the law of the government itself. Why do we have a law if we will just violate it? What will be the purpose of the law if we will junk it again and again? I just think we don’t need the law anymore if we will not follow it.
Discuss how adherents of ethical egoism and altruism would analyze the situations. Support your answer.
As stated ethical egoism and ethical altruism are two principles of morality that use to support certain ethical judgment.
Roger designed a computer program that would make detection of enemy codes easier.
Thru the theory of motivation Ethical egoism can be introduced and clearly understood. It can be determined weather it is an object of aversion (evil) or an object of desire (good). In this situation Roger has a strong desire to easily detect enemy code using his designed program. Well, he will use it for his own good and benefit, to make him satisfied. Pursuing his desire will lead him to personal gratification and personal happiness and that is morally good. But the question is what if his enemy will do the same. Do programs that would easily detect his program codes? I just think if you have an enemy I will just pray for it because I know that the vengeance is for the Lord. I just have a question. State it clearly what is the difference of ethical egoism to ethical altruism? In this case, I think there is no ethical altruism here. Because it is only for his own good, for own use and personal gratification. For his self interest and self satisfaction and no desire to promote good for others.
Perla plans to buy licensed software in U.S. using royalties from the sale of her book on computer ethics, and donate the software to her alma mater.
I believe that we will consider the motives of every human being. Good or bad must be considered. Anyway we are not perfect. The really question is that what is the motive of Perla? Why she’s doing it? We can’t answer that. Only Perla knows what is in her heart and mind. Probably, Perla wants to help her Alma Mater because it’s been a part of her life that’s why she’s doing it. And that act is morally good. She’s not doing it for her own good alone but for the benefit of her Alma Mater which is wonderful. Truly she’s in the right track. She has a right motive. Anyway Perla is just planning. But her plan is good. Good in a way that it doesn’t evolve in her personal gratification and personal interest alone but for the benefits of others. If Perla motives was to donate the licensed software just to put her name in the list of those people who donate “donated by” then her motive is for her own sake again. But according to the law of God it is better to give than to receive. Part of giving is sacrifice. Sacrifice for finances and anything under the sun. Perla will sacrifice money and her computer ethics books. Then if you sacrifice things not just for your own good then ethical altruism comes. According to the book egoists believed that there is no such a pure altruism or the desire to promote others well, I doubt it. Because if you give things in the right motive, right desire and right action to the benefit of others then your motive is pure. You will be contented and you will be happy. If after Perla gave the licensed software to her Alma Mater and her Alma Mater in return gave her gratification, thanking for what she have done well it’s a mater of reward.
Marjo wants to create a virus that would affect only laptop operations.
Again there is ethical egoism in this situation. For his self satisfaction and gratification. But then again it’s not bad for me if you develop your talents and skills by doing some sort of viruses. Because I just think I exercise what I have learned. Yes Marjo will be happy and contented. His action is merely for his mask self-interest and would affect laptop operation. Sorry for those who have a laptop?
Baba debugged a secret code of the NBI that allowed her to access all computer systems of the agency. She plans to sabotage the whole system as a form of revenge for what she considers to be the NBI’s violation of her human rights.
Well in this case Baba motive is very wrong. Considering that NBI just do their job. Revenge is very bad because many people will be affected. I know Baba has a wit to do these things because he is determined. He has a strong desire that will lead him to personal gratification and self interest. But then it will violate the natural law and most of all the Divine Law which is the judge is God alone. I believed that there is an ethical altruism here. Why? Because those terrorist and most wanted in town wants this organization will be mash away. And it’s the benefit of others too not for BABA alone.
Tikya and John-John were contracted to design and develop a website for government agencies in the Philippines at the cost of P1 million. An added feature of the contract is that they would be contracted as computing consultants of the government.
First and foremost Tikya and John-John will benefit because they will have a job in developing a website they will have P 1 million pesos for it, plus they will be contracted as computing consultants. Although they benefit from it the government agencies will benefit also as well as the employees of the government. As I’ve said, what Tikya and John-John do is just a reward to their labor. Why? Because how come we will work in a company or organization if we don’t have salary to make us happy that will give us many things. Yes, they will be happy and contented but the mere fact is both will benefit. It is not just personal gratification but also a help to the government agencies. There is a unique chain on this. If you work then you will bear the fruit of your labor. Both ethical egoism and altruism can be seen in this situation.
Software piracy is morally bad but morally good under certain circumstances. Saq2: Ethics & the Law
there is relevance in the study of the concept of law and in my study of Computer ethics. Actually, because my field of industry is not related in computing, computer laws I don’t mind if many people around the net will hack, steal properties like programs, put viruses and other else. Impact I admired those person who can do these things. How they have done all of these things? That’s a big Wow to me. Honestly speaking they are brilliant in some way. What I don’t want is that hackers, programmers & the like use there God’s given talent to steal property. Example is that accessing World Bank, hackers can steal money from the bank just deposit it trough another account with the use of computer which is very bad. And in that is “bawas pogi points”. I just believe that I can hack but there is limitations that I will not do anything harm just to gain money. Which as far as I’m concern stealing one’s property is truly bad and in that I know I committed a sin. I will violate the Divine Law which is the judge is God’s alone. As I’ve study it, it is clearly in my mind that whatever laws in the land, must be clearly obeyed and followed so that I will not violate the law. Now, it’s very clear to me. In computer ethics professionalism is a must. Being in the IT field we must act as a professional. Professional meaning whatever law in computing must be strictly implemented and obeyed. Also determining what is right and wrong. The law protects the right and intellectual property of the people, customs and beliefs thus respecting one’s owned must be private. I’ve learned too much in studying computer ethics. It makes me change what I have believed. That’s why no to computer hackers, it’s a very private property. The concept of law made a Standard Operating Procedure that is, it must be strictly implemented. The authorities who made this law are not just only one person, but they are many considering not only for their own benefit but for all human kind. Protecting the intellectual property, rights and the privacy of the people is the concept of law. Considering before the law was made, decided researching and thorough studying is done and the basis of this law is the ethical principles of Computer. Without Computer Ethics how come they put up a law? Before the law is enacted and decided the basis of this law is the principle of ethics. That is the relevance.
2. List down two laws governing computer use and explain what types of non-jural law seem to underpin these two laws.
v Hacking- thou shall not snoop around in others people file. People’s other file is so private that we must respect their privacy. Sometimes even it is too private accessing the web or the domain for curiosity and for own benefit even it’s bad, we are eagerly looking for it. “Bad is always a very delicious one”, Yummy. Money is in our mind. Hacking involves unauthorized access to a computer, files and programs. The main reason why is hacking is around the world it is because of stealing, taking valuable files such as credit card, numbers and list of customer. Sometimes programmers use hacking for revenge. Well, the types of non-jural law that underpin this law is:
· Divine Law – hacking is a sin. Snooping others file and stealing violates the 10 commandment of God. Thou shall not steal. Although there is no computer in that time, God is so powerful He knows what will happen. He knows that His creation will steal things just to gain profit from that. Also, revenge is a sin. The revenge is mine says the Lord. No one has the authority to revenge. The revenge is for God’s alone.
· Natural Law – there is a law in the land, enacted and institutionalized by men that thou shall not use computer to steal, to harm the intellectual property of mankind. It is not just, too unfair if we steal property that is not belong to us. Anyway, people become rich because they been so hard working, industrious and patient. That is the fruit of their labor, if hackers will steal property from them it is like trigging a bullet from a person to be killed. Remember always there is the law in the land.
· Moral Law – hacking does not respect the rights of the owner’s intellectual property; it is also a form of cheating. Hacking also is a crime and a computer abuses. “Honesty is the best policy”. Hacking violates the moral law. Hacker’s behavior is not good as if they will use it for revenge.
· Physical Law – ones hackers do it all the time he wants, regularity and imperativeness comes.
v Damaging one’s reputation through the use of Computer. Thou shall not use a computer to harm other people.
God Created Eve to be a help to Adam. But God does not created Eve just to abuse by men to dishonor the decency of a woman. Nude pictures of women in the internet even it is faked and altered has been thoroughly spread in the World Wide Web. Men are enjoying to see this wonderful photos. Oh boy. That is the lust of the flesh. Damaging one’s reputation and it is too bad. If my pictures will be there in the nude style or position although it’s not my body. Well I feel very a shame. I will see to it that person who use my photo’s will be in prison. “Nakakahiya Talaga”. Damaging one’s reputation is very bad. The types of non-jural law that underpin this law are:
· Divine Law – If the eye is the cause to make you sin then threw it into the fire. Well, I’m not saying take away your eyes physically because you can’t see. That’s very wrong what am I trying to say is that don’t use your eyes for lusty things. Also don’t use God’s given talent just to put nude photos in the internet. Although most men’s are the author of all these things in the internet just to satisfy the eagerness for sex, it must be avoided. No men will dishonor the reputation of a woman because it will violate the law of God. If a man feel there basic need to woman as if they are sinning, they have their evil thoughts and strong desire the best way not to publish nude photos in the WEB is to pray. Divine Law is the hardest thing to obey and easiest way to disobey.
· Natural Law – There is a law stating no to pornography. It is not righteous if programmers and hackers will publish nude photos in the Web. That is a crime and punishable by law.
· Moral Law – Those person who publish nude photos in the internet are very immoral, no ethics at all. They are wicked and crazy.
Case of Melinda
Copying is not merely bad for me if you will use it to have a new idea. That’s for reference. But of course, if you copy the assignment of your classmate as is that is a very wrong idea. That is my point. In the case of Melinda her action done is unethical. She knew that buying license software is expensive. I have a strong feeling that she has a plan already in her mind before she buys license software. There is a wrong motive behind her but she’s not yet executing it or putting it into action. One day she’s decided to buy the license software which she knows it is expensive. In her mind it’s alright to buy the license software in higher price because she will reproduce copies to be sold to her friends and acquaintance to make her money back and not that all to gain profit from that software. That makes her violating the law. Once a plan is in your mind alone your not yet violating the law but if you put it into actions then violation comes. She violates the Natural law.
Natural Law
What Melinda’s action is unjust, unfair & unrighteous? It’s too unfair to Cyberzone who owned that computer software. Cyberzone will not get any profit to the copies made by Melinda. Melinda must respect the rights of Cyberzone, the intellectual property. They are the only one who can reproduce that. “ Kung sa Palagay mo ay Tama ka” do it, but if your conscience are telling or dictating you that it is wrong just stop it. Anyway, if you by pass the belief, custom & rights of others violating the natural law you must know the consequence of your actions.
Divine Law
In divine law it’s different. Because were talking about the perfection of God, the perfection of human being. I myself personally disobeyed the Divine Law of God. Yes, it’s too difficult to obey God. Many times I violate the Divine Law of God. Thus telling it’s too easy to violate it. As I always say, I’m only human bound to make mistake. As stated, even if you do not translate your evil thoughts into action you committed a sin. Melinda committed a sin, she has an evil thought, a strong desire and in fact she has a motive of selling copies to her friends. In Divine Law God is always searching and checking our hearts. He is always looking the true heart of a person, checking the heart of his mater piece.
Moral Law
Melinda also violates the moral law. Her actions and intentions are not good thus she violates the moral law. Melinda copies the licensed software and sells it to her friends and acquaintance. She knew that she will violate the law. Melinda does not respect the rights of Cyberzone the intellectual property, she does not even comply with the computer norms and law. Plus honesty is the best policy.
Physical Law
I doubt if Melinda’s action violates the physical law. May be if Melinda do it regularly. Make it as her business and the like then it violates the physical law. As stated the main characteristic of physical law is regularity and imperativeness. It is regular because once it becomes operative; its efficacy remains constant and unbreakable. It is imperative because it is permanent and unchangeable. Although Melinda executed her plan and sold pirated software, it is not clearly stated if she just wants to return her money back that’s why she’s selling the pirated software or she do that for making it as a business thus operating regularly. In that case she violates the physical law.
